UV Standard 801: A Concise Guide from Forensic Perspective​

For forensic experts, who often witness skin damage caused by long-term UV exposure, UV Standard 801 is more than a textile certification—it’s a vital tool for preventing UV-related harm. Developed by the Austrian Standards Institute (ASI), this globally recognized standard sets strict criteria for textiles’ UV protection.

At its core is the Ultraviolet Protection Factor (UPF). To earn certification, fabrics must have a UPF of at least 40 (blocking 97.5% of UV rays), with UPF 50+ (over 98% blocking) labeled “excellent.” Unlike basic tests, it requires checks in both dry and wet conditions, plus after 20 washes—mimicking real use, as moisture and washing can reduce protection.

The testing process is systematic: certified labs test samples matching finished products’ thickness, weave, and color (darker/denser fabrics perform better). Using simulated sunlight, they measure UVA/UVB transmission to calculate UPF. Only those maintaining UPF 40+ post-tests get certified.
